However, skepticism can shade into a type of dogmatic materialism that excludes intercessory prayer in principle, as when Newton’s colleagues condemned universal gravity as occult nonsense without weighing the evidence (Mills, 1996). Both true believers and committed disbelievers in intercessory prayer might heed the view of mathematical physicist and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, who co-authored Principia Mathematica with Bertrand Russell (Whitehead, 1948):
